MIGRATION

The International Organisation for Migration defines migration as 'the movement of people from their place of habitual residence, either across an international border or within a state' (IOM, 2019).

This definition, however factual, oversimplifies a complex phenomenon that links human mobility to the legal status of the subject. Consequently, migration - although a global and unstoppable social process - is one of the most heated battlegrounds of our time. Influenced by a variety of factors, including economic, social, political or environmental reasons, migration can be voluntary, with individuals seeking better economic opportunities or quality of life, or involuntary, driven by wars, persecution, natural disasters or other crises.

Migration impacts individuals, families and communities and is too often framed through the lens of security and economic necessity, which can oversimplify the intricate interplay behind the decision to migrate.
